The grass is always greener

In June 2011, I lived in a historic urban neighborhood where people shouted on the sidewalks at night, delicious Greek food was 50 steps from the back door, and I had this semi-backyard. Now, I live in a quiet, suburban apartment complex where a short drive in any direction leads to a big-box store, but also the cuisine of at least 10 different ethnicities.

I miss this walnut-riddled, gravel monstrosity all the time, but I suppose the grass is always greener.

Chihuly trivia

I kind of think it's cheating to act as if a cool-looking photo has anything to do with the photographer if the only thing it's capturing is someone else's artwork. So, all credit to Dale Chihuly, who made a pretty cool-looking glass ceiling at the Franklin Park Conservatory.

By the way, did you know that Frasier Crane has a Chihuly sculpture beside the fireplace in his Seattle apartment? Now you know.

Focus on the music

I'm not sure why, but for a while around this time last year, I really wanted to take wide, out-of-focus photos. It just really appealed to me.

If I were to overanalyze this, I could probably decide that it was because last year was kind of an out-of-focus blur to me because I had a lot of big life changes. Or that maybe I was trying to get myself to see the "big picture" without having to focus too much on the details. I'm not sure the part of my brain that operates a camera is that in sync with my subconscious, though.

Regardless, this is the Newport Music Hall, and I was watching Fitz and the Tantrums.

Commitment

OK. I've got an external hard drive full of photos that I can only assume will stop existing if no one ever sees them, and I'm going to try to post some of them with at least a little regularity.

So get ready! Sorry I haven't posted since last December! (Ooh, I winced when I typed that.)

Here are a couple of semi-recent photos from my niece's visit for her 8th birthday...

Here we are at her favorite restaurant, Tip Top:

And later at her favorite ice cream place, Jeni's, with a fresh cast from breaking her arm earlier that week:

Natalie

Halloween

Yes, I realize Halloween was almost two months ago. Shhh.

Here's my friend Drew while I was helping him with his zombie face paint (we're not done yet at this point):

Here's Mike, as Johnny from The Room, which I mention all the time on this blog. I'm really not THAT crazy about it. I promise.
Other Susannah tasting the cider:
Natalie and Susannah...
"You are tearing me apart, Lisa!"

Hello.

Well, the place pictured above is partially to blame (in a good way) for my unexplained absence from this blog.

I've been working at The Columbus Dispatch as a Web producer, which is awesome.

I have to admit that because I was working about 60 to 65 hours a week as a copy editor and movie theater girl (a la Ghost World), it wouldn't take much to make me really excited about a new, full-time job in my field.

I'm so grateful to have ended up here.

Rose-colored life

My parents and grandparents visited me a few weeks ago, and I forgot to put up this picture I took of my grandma in the Whetstone Park of Roses in Clintonville. It was one of those days that wasn't really that hot, but you could kind of smell your skin burning in the sun.

I wonder how the roses felt.

Tuesday, August 3, 2010

Oh, I guess it's August, now.

July 2010 zoomed by faster than any month has in recent memory. There have been lots of life changes for me, but I won't bore you with the trivial bits. Instead, I've got some shout-outs...

To mid-summer: Thanks for your amazing sunsets, pal.

To the Jeni's Ice Cream on Grandview Avenue (OK, any Jeni's): Your wildberry lavender, cherry lambic and goat cheese flavors are my favorite combination for an end-of-the-day treat in 90-degree weather.

To Club 185 in German Village: Thanks for giving my group of friends a great Friday-afternoon spot for drinks.

To COSI: You (and Jen, below) are so hypnotizing.

I'm back! And ready to talk about movies

Some of the "fun times" I mentioned in my last post were different significant movie experiences I've had recently. First was The Room. Now, I had already seen The Room many times, but the Drexel Theatre here in Columbus shows it on the second Saturday of every month and encourages interaction with the movie a la Rocky Horror Picture Show. For "Room virgins," they even put together a pretty fun explanation of the movie (it's not really appropriate for kids):

Mike, Gia and I went to a screening and found that the big-screen version let us discover all sorts of new things and made certain scenes all the more disgusting.

And, of course, I took a couple of photos.

A few days after The Room, some friends and I headed over to the Wexner Center to see The Life Aquatic projected on a big screen outside...

...and on the opening night of Toy Story 3, Joel, Natalie and I saw the magic of Pixar's latest release in IMAX 3-D, which may be obvious from the following photos.

Good. Times.

Donald is my current rearview mirror dangler. I think he's been enjoying the views of the sunsets on 270.

One of my newer friends in Columbus, Jessica, baked me a cake for my birthday. It was strawberry-flavoed and was decorated with a bunch of tiny plastic babies with purple frosting turbans.

Absurdism is really the only surefire way to please me, and somehow Jessica knew that, so bravo to her, and bravo to this lone cake baby, who managed to maintain buoyancy in such light, fluffy frosting on the last piece of cake.

Blue and orange...

I feel like I've been taking a lot of photos lately that use blue and orange almost exclusively. It reminds me of how there is this thing about movie posters having blue and orange backgrounds complementing each other all the time (if you don't know what I'm talking about, check this out). Blue is, of course, calming, and orange is supposed to be energetic or mentally stimulating. I don't know if that's supposed to have some significance with me subconsciously and that's why I've been drawn to it lately, but it is interesting to think about.

The night after my friends' L.E.S. Crew show, I was right back at Skully's with my friend Jen to see one of our favorite bands, Sherwood.

The bottom photo shows Justin Reece, the lead singer of opening band Reece, joining the guys for a cover of Party in the USA.

I snapped this when my friend and I were making a bathroom run to DP Dough on High Street at 2 in the morning. Can you see the desperation?

Living Energy System

Two of my friends from high school are in a pretty cool hip-hop band called The L.E.S. Crew.

These photos are from their March 20th show at Skully's. The lighting was especially low that night and was probably most challenging concert lighting I've ever encountered, so I'm glad I was able to end up with some OK photos.

Living in the same city as Joel (pictured in an earlier post on this blog) has given us plenty of chances to hang out. I've been going over to his friends Dan and Jessica's house lately, and this is one of their crazy dogs.

Dax had been staring at me in this pose for several minutes and, frankly, creeped me out a little, so of course I had to take a picture of him.

Living in our new apartment means we live closer to Natalie's sister, who has visited a couple times. This means that we also live closer to Natalie's nephew and new niece, Cami, who stopped by about a week after we moved.

Saturday, February 20, 2010

Natalie and I checked the mail before starting the big move-in to our new apartment. Earlier, we had talked about how great it would be that we wouldn't be sweaty and hot while moving furniture, but we hadn't realized there would be so much snow and ice to clear...

Natalie and I went apartment hunting last week. It was an eye-opening pain in the neck.
